Chrissa Amuah - Bernhardt Textiles

Chrissa Amuah

Chrissa Amuah is a textile design MA graduate, with distinction, from the world-renowned Chelsea College of Art & Design, University of the Arts London. Although born and raised in London, her heritage stems from Ghana, Togo, and Benin.

In 2014, she established AMWA Designs. AMWA Designs goes beyond design for its own sake. Its designs are underpinned by the beauty and integrity in great craftsmanship. AMWA Designs creates handmade textiles and print designs for the home. It is built on the principle that our homes and private spaces should be enveloped with beautiful furnishings that evoke powerful and positive thoughts within us. The Adinkra symbols and proverbs of Ghana form the inspiration. The symbols serve a decorative function, but also convey traditional wisdom and adages.

She has always described living with a sense of duality. So, it is only natural that AMWA Designs illustrates a beautiful assimilation of concepts and cultures.

AMWA Designs speaks to a contemporary generation whose lifestyle is forward-thinking. The meanings of Adinkra are timeless and transcend all cultures. AMWA Designs sees them as motivation for 21st-century living. “If our beings are nurtured in environments filled with wisdom that promotes positivity, upon exiting our homes and stepping out into the world every day – by the power of symbolic osmosis – we all share the opportunity to walk each step with intended harmony.”

Alongside AMWA Designs, Chrissa has created AFRICA BY DESIGN; a platform intended to cross-pollinate ideas and talent from across sub-Saharan Africa. AFRICA BY DESIGN promotes the relevance, pride, emotional and empowering innovation and conviction of design talent from across the continent.

In 2020, Chrissa Amuah became a member of the Allgood Collective and serves as a brand ambassador for the sustainable footwear brand, Allbirds. Additionally, in December 2020, Chrissa made her Design Miami/ debut with Freedom To Move, a conceptual project sponsored by luxury car brand, Lexus. A selection of Chrissa’s work is featured in Designed by Women, a website organized by the Stewart Program for Modern Design. An objects-based traveling exhibition is planned in collaboration with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, in 2023.

Chrissa will collaborate with renowned architect, Alice Asafu-Adjaye, representing Ghana at the London Design Biennale 2021. The London Design Biennale is a global gathering of the world’s most ambitious and imaginative designers, curators and design institutes.
